The Shrew Soft VPN Client has been designed to communicate with standards based IPsec VPN gateways.
Commercial IPsec VPN Gateways
There are many commercial security appliances that support IPsec VPN client connectivity. For more information on how to use the Shrew Soft VPN Client with a wide range of security appliances, please visit the support wiki section of our web site.
Open Source IPsec VPN Gateways
There are many open source operating systems that can be installed and configured to support IPsec VPN Client connectivity. The Shrew Soft VPN Client has been tested with several operating systems such as Linux, FreeBSD and NetBSD. While the details related to installing and configuring an open source operating system is beyond the scope of this document, there are several documents available on the Internet that describe how to accomplish this in great detail.
IPsec Tools
An open source operating system can be used to provide the necessary kernel support to protect IP traffic using the IPsec protocols. Before the operating system can be used to support VPN Client connectivity, a set of tools are required to allow an administrator to interface with the kernel facilities and provide support for the Internet Key Exchange protocol. In this document, we will describe how to use IPsec Tools to provide this functionality.
